Really nice effort to depict the Tonga Ride. I really enjoyed it while reading. It gave me feelings as if I were sitting on the front seat of Tonga analyzing the situation itself.

People kill themselves when they are extremely unhappy (suicidal depression), wonder if there is any example or is it at all possible someone would kill him/herself because of intense continued happiness?!!??! Just a quirky thought.

May be, being happy and remaining as such is a "way of living" than an "aim of living". Some people hold that being unhappy and depressed makes you more creative; think of Ernest Hemingway. It must hold some ground as we see our poets always expressing grief, tragedy, loss, pain, sorrow, distress and miseries. Chances are, I think, if you are not creative and ingenious in a happy state of mind, being unhappy and depressed is your best bet. By the way isn't introspection more pronounced and piercing when somebody is in a "down" mental state?

This analysis is not meant to be exhaustive or philosophical, but still it explains a lot. I think, regular introspection is key to understanding reasons for being happy or unhappy. This is more important for those who believe in a 'Creator'. While belief or faith in 'God' may be customary for most of the average persons on the globe, it becomes a 'living faith' only through effort which includes introspection besides other things.

quote "I’ve lived a reasonably contented life. I’ve often thought about what it is that makes people happy—what one has to do in order to achieve happiness" unquote

I cannot resist thinking Khushwant's observation were not wide enough to account for so many aberrations. Why so many wealthy people are constantly unhappy, why a lot of poor people live content and happy lives in real sense of the meaning. Human are found in such varied and diverse states of minds, it may be difficult to find a "universal" happiness formula. If human were machines sans feelings and heart, moods and desires, quest and failure, his formula might work. I don't know if Khushwant had secular ideas, but for an average person whose head is connected to his Creator in metaphysical realm and feet on ground and heart in between, being happy might have an altogether different ingredients and recipe.
