It is expected that a high profile marriage generates media interest. And when our cricket zero (overnight hero) slipped and fell in the tennis courts of Hyderabad, it created a storm in media. At least in Pakistan, everyone for a short time forgot 18th constitutional amendment, war on terrorism, suicide bombings and power outages. The youth danced on the drums and celebrated the news like a victory. Relentless media coverage focused every aspect of the tailor made juicy, spicy story. First was the speculation that they are about to marry. Thankfully, a confirmation from the couple came early. Then it was investigative part- how and when it started. Next came the dates for the marriage functions. Then some leading designer jumped in to suggest what dresses should be worn by the bride and bridegroom. One of them offered his services for free (I take it as an advertising stunt). And when all looked rosy, an ex-wife surfaced out of no where and focused shifted on validity of a purported Nikah (marriage). Claims and counter claims were made. The wife-to-be came in support for her husband-to-be. Clarification statements in writing were issued. Counter fatwas (religious decree) regarding validity of marriage were cited by both parties. In between all this mess the passport of our cricketer was confiscated. Finally, a compromise was worked out and the focus shifted back to marriage. All through this continuing high velocity drama, one media channel in particular has been entertaining us with top chart bollywood songs dramatized on the couple. I salute their ingenuity but consider this bordering non sense. I also fail to understand why anybody could be interested in showing and watching feet of a newly married girl riding a hike in an aircraft. If this all was not enough, the couple got a taste of what it is like when they landed in Karachi and Lahore. There is still a walima to go. May God have mercy on them. This is what we call in Punjabi hore choopo (as you sow, so shall you reap).
